If you are looking to Buy a Quad Bike or ATV, we have listed below some tips and tricks which gives an insight into what to look for. Even though many Quad Bikes are fitted with a distance registration device (speedometer with mileage counter) some off road machines do not have them. This obviously does not help when trying to find out how long the engine has been ran for or how many miles the Quad Bike or ATV has covered.
Even though it is a legal requirement to have a speedometer fitted for on road use, it does not always come with a mileage recording meter. Some of the Chinese imported vehicles just come with a basic speedometer and no mileage recording meter at all.

Buying Guidelines
- Tip 1 - Always make sure that when buying any vehicle be it a Quadbike - ATV - Buggy - MiniMoto that you always see a picture before you buy it. With so many being scattered around the country, sometimes you have to buy out of your area to find the right one. If you find one in a magazine or newspaper always make sure you contact the seller and ask for some pictures to be sent via email first. If this is not possible then our advice is to stay clear and keep looking
- Tip 2 - There are many sources for buying Quad Bikes and ATV's etc, some better than others. One issue that we see more than most are when people buy from auction sites and don't receive the goods or they arrive "Not As Described. Most of the auction sites are based outside of the UK and if you ever come across this problem, it is extremely difficult to get the complete details from them should you wish to pursue the seller in court.
- Tip 3 - If you are spending over £500 on your purchase it is always a good idea to get the Quad Bike, ATV, Buggy or Minimoto checked over before you pay. This is a wise move for the sake of say £100 to a local garage in the area where you are buying it from, or through one of the reputable services offered by eg "The AA" or "The RAC." I would much prefer to know that the purchase was as described and take delivery of the goods than the other way round, take delivery and find it is not what you thought it was going to be.
- Tip 4 - Never buy a New Quad Bike or Used Quad Bike without any documentation. Once the vehicle is in your possession you are 9/10ths of the law the owner. But, unless you have legal title and there is a hidden history then there is fair chance that something could be out of your control. With off-road quad bikes or atv's it is slightly different as they do not have registration certificates. The only thing you have us possibly a receipt. If it is a new quad bike or atv, Imported Quad Bike or any imported vehicle for that matter, make sure you have the correct documentation from the person you are buying it through. This will include an EU certificate of conformity and also a HMCS Tax and VAT paid certificate to say that duty has been paid. Without the later two, you can be still liable for paying any outstanding duty should they HMCE find that it has not been paid.
- Tip 5 - If you are ever in doubt about buying a Quad Bike Or ATV then you should make sure that you use the legal system to find any data before becoming the owner. We recommend you use HPi as your number one resource tool for finding history on any vehicle, so don't go and buy it, till you HPi it!
