The Consumer
Having spoken to many different users of Quad Bikes and ATVs, it was plain to see that most of them had the same question to ask; how do we know that we have the right policy?
In this day and age, it is not difficult to spot so I won't try and teach granny to suck eggs and give you a brief outline what to look for and how to make sure that you are getting like for like without digging through each schedule to find the right one.

The Broker
One of the main problems when talking to an insurance company is this; "Don't tell them what they don't need to know!"
By this I am not saying hold back relevant information, in fact that is the last thing you should do when looking for an Insurance quote for any vehicle. What I mean is that Insurance agents do have a clever way of getting information from you so that they can make more money, by simply asking what the renewal is on your existing policy and then going silent.
The Sales Pitch
The longer they stay silent, the harder it is for you not to tell them so make sure you have a sensible answer for them when they ask the question. The other one is if you have just purchased a Quad Bike or ATV or you are looking at buying one, they ask if you have had any quotes before contacting them.
Again, the simple answer is to say "YES" and then if they ask for the price, you just casually slide back the answer that you never gave them any help, so will not do so with them also. The second point is to make sure you give the same information that you gave the other companies, including the excess payment on the policy. This will then make sure you have a close like for like comparison when looking at one against the other.
Increasing the Value
Lastly, never increase the value of the machine over and above the market value as this will end up costing you more on your premium and, should you need to make a claim, they will only pay you the market price at the time of the claim. An example of this is some companies will increase the premium by more than 25GBP per thousand value, and other increase by the same for every 500GBP.
The Right Security
Always ask the question when talking to a broker online - "Do I need any special security adaptations whilst the vehicle is parked or stored on my premises?" It has been known that insurance brokers have excluded this out of the conversation to keep the policy price down. Then, all of a sudden you find that once the schedule arrives it states you need two types of locking mechanism for your bike - one is an insurance approved locking system, and the other is a mounting system bolted to either a wall or concrete floor.
Once you get the price for these, you would understand why they were cheaper. The approved padlocking system can cost between £50 - £150 and the mounting system can cost about the same. A simple but effective quality lock will suffice when in your garage or shed - you just need to make sure that they can not remove it quietly or easily!
