Placing safety flags on your vehicle are an affordable way to keep it in Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations where required. When you have an oversized load or wide load, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires that a fluorescent orange or red flag is attached. The load that extends four inches wider or four feet longer than the end of the standard vehicle designates it as oversized. Size of the flags and specific placement of them depends on the width of the load, so be sure to check with the FMCSA, your state DOT or other governing bodies if needed to avoid penalty.
Business Off-road Vehicles
Construction, mining, airports and other industrial businesses need flags for safety and identification purposes. A flag at the top of a Flagstaff warning whip can warn other's of the truck's presence. For quick and easy recognition they are almost a must. The whips are easy enough to attach with a bolt, and magnetic attachments are even available for moving from vehicle to vehicle if necessary. Lighted versions are available for early morning and twilight visibility for top safety.
Off Road Vehicles for Recreation
Safety flags are required for off-road and non-highway registered vehicles too in some states. California and other state parks require a safety whip that extends at least eight feet off of the ground and have a safety flag that is red or orange within 10 inches of the top of the whip. The State Vehicular Recreation Areas of California (SVRA), operated by the state's Off-highway Vehicle department, has several parks in the state that makes off-roading available, and safety is the goal of the regulations.
Triangular and square safety flags are available. The better quality square shaped flags have a curve on the two outside corners so that they will wear better in the windy environment in which they exist. Flags can come in many colors, typically the red and orange safety shades but also yellow, blue and green. Safety flags have so many good purposes so do your research and post one if it's required.
